Dribbling is the basic skill of getting the soccer ball from one end of the field to the other end, and the fact is you will put more time in dribbling the ball then pretty much anything else. It needs to be pointed out that you need to be very careful when you are taking time out to improve on this skill.
It is a lot harder to dribble a soccer ball then it is to dribble a basketball due to the simple point you are not allowed to use your hands. Due to this you are going to have to keep exact control of the ball just using your feet while you run as fast as possible, looking out for those who are on the opposing team and keeping a watch for your own teammates so that you are aware of where you need to pass the ball if you are required to do so. All this makes it obvious you are not going to have much time or energy left over to concentrate on your dribbling technique.
It is a good thing that learning to dribble well is a simple thing to learn. You will just need a standard sized soccer ball an open field and some time to spare. The idea is to tap the ball from one foot to the other making use of your instep so that you are primarily are holding the ball between your legs as you move down the field; it is not a good idea to have the ball to far ahead of you as that can lead to the ball being in the reach of the opposing team, on the other hand if you don't have the ball far enough in front of you, you will sooner or later get tripped up and the ball will fall back behind you.
Only try to push the ball as far head as your running stride, this will get you ready for when you are trapped with a group of players. If you are going down a somewhat free field you will need to get the ball a bit more forward; the fact is kicking the ball ahead of you is the simple part.
Be sure to concentrate on only letting your instep touch the ball as you are dribbling. Much of the time it can be a temptation to let the front of your foot connect, due to the fact that this part is the most easily available as you run; but the fact is kicking the ball with the front or top of your foot will only make the ball fall out of your control. You will practically have no control over what it does or where it goes. As beginning to learn to run while dribbling a ball between your insteps can be a stimulating and in general a situation that lacks dignity, it is advisable to keep in mind to not have an audience while practicing this skill in the first place so then when you do get to the point of being on display to your peers you will be able to show at least a small level of skill so therefore you will be able to avoid the inevitable put downs that come with showing a lack of skill on the playing field.
